This month’s photo of the month is of a moment that happens at almost every wedding we photograph, the first dance. Usually in low light and with the evening atmosphere taking full effect the first dance photograph is all about capturing three things:
- The ambiance in the room,
- The feeling between the couple as they dance together as husband and wife,
- The friends and family looking on supporting the bride and groom.

The image taken below is one of our favorite ever first dance shots. The beautiful lighting, the expression of the couple, the guests enjoying the dance and the slight movement in the image depicts all that we love about this moment on the wedding day. The mood of the reception space in the evening created by the fairy lights, lanterns and bunting is shown with all the happiness of the first dance perfectly captured.
First dance shots are always technically interesting and challenging in wedding photography. Balancing the use of lighting against retaining the natural ambiance of the room is always something we love to do and enables us to really capture the atmosphere and emotion at this time of the wedding for our couples to reminisce over after the wedding day.
