There are a myriad number of guides and lists of questions to ask when it comes to how to pick your perfect wedding photographer. Like most advice this can either be hugely helpful or make the decision making process even more complicated. Having spoken to many of our couples we share 3 simple bits of advice for choosing a wedding photographer that will capture your day how you imagine.
How to Pick Your Perfect Wedding Photographer
1. Assume worst case scenario! Think of your worst possible outcome when it comes to your wedding photography. Knowing what you don’t want can help you to figure out what you do want. Would you be heartbroken if your wedding photographs came out badly executed with key moments and elements completely missed? Then quality photography is important to you and you need to prioritise accordingly. Does the idea of cheesy forced poses make you cringe? Then perhaps look for a photographer who’s style is elegant and natural in their portfolio. Are you putting a lot of thought into the styling of your day? Check if details are something a photographer showcases in their portfolio.
2. First impressions… This is so important in all walks of life and in photographers’ case this is created by their website and blog. Their website is an extension of them and their business. Here you can have a good look at their online portfolio, recent weddings and read how they describe their work and services. Does their website look professional and modern? Have they got a photo of themselves on their about page? Does their work get published in national wedding magazines or established wedding blogs?
3. Follow Your Instincts! We think there is no better way to establish trust then by talking to a person. You can arrange to phone, video chat using Google Hangout or Skype or even meet your photographer face to face when you are considering procuring their services. Do they sound professional, passionate, intelligent, friendly and excited about being part of your wedding day? These are all clues you can gain from a simple conversation. And honestly we love chatting to Brides to see if from our perspective we will be a good fit for their day too! Once you have found a photographer where there is mutual trust you can leave them to do their thing and capture the most beautiful record of your day!
We definitely advise that couples do their homework to succeed in how to pick your perfect wedding photographer. There are no do-overs and you only get one shot to ensure your precious memories are captured and preserved for you in a way that you can enjoy for years to come. Ask for recommendations from friends, venues and other suppliers and know that a true artist cares about your day as much as they do about their craft.
